New skater Amanda explains what starting roller derby is like…
Are you wondering what it is like turning up to one of our events? Are you having a bit of a wobble of worry about those scary looking rollergirls? Fret not! We asked our newest member Amanda to let us know what it is like the first time you turn up to try out roller derby…
A colleague at work told me one day that she had joined Roller Derby & told me all about it. I was looking for something to do as I hate traditional exercise, I loved skating as a youngster so thought why not!
I googled for local teams & found the Dollies. Right from the first message they were lovely & welcoming. I was concerned about my size as I’m not a small lady but I was reassured it was not an issue.
On the day I arrived I was immediately welcomed & accepted. I had a wobble a week or so ago feeling I couldn’t do it, but was again supported by everyone. They are a lovely bunch of ladies who are so accepting & welcoming. I’ll keep coming even if I don’t get the hang of this!!
xx
So do you feel a bit better about it? We hope so!
You may have seen that we are launching the Space Cadet programme on the 30th July. It’s a dedicated session for new skaters, referees & NSO’s (Non skating officials). That means you will be in good company of other new people! A lot less scary when you’re not the only one!
If you can’t make that date, then yet again, don’t worry, you can still just come along on another Sunday. Just message us on recruitment@dollyrockitrollers.co.uk and we’ll sort something out.
